Feeding From The Plush Side of the Paddock

It’s amazing how your life can come down to as few as two pieces of A4 paper – double spaced and justified.

Today I signed my Will, Power of Attorney and Power of Guardianship which is a load of both Em and my minds.

We also had our meeting with Batman the OB. We had an ultrasound and checked that Bugs had all the right things in all the right places and she has been “feeding from the plush side of the paddock” – which, in this case, is my “juicy placenta” – oh the squirming Em did! There is a slight calcification of the placenta which should not be a problem however I think it’ll be interesting to see it when it comes out. I’m sure its cause is an excess of ice cold Milo during the pregnancy. We were given an induction day next week only to be told unfortunately that is a day our goddaughter goes to Kindy so we’ll either have to reschedule or she’ll have to take the day off. Thankfully quick thinker Em agreed that we wouldn’t have the baby until after 3:15 so she could still go to Kindy and then come and meet the baby. Super Man also called to tell us that next week isn’t good for him either as he starts his two week rotation and won’t be privy to seeing the “newborn”. It sure is hard to fit birth in to everyones schedules!

On a Roll

We’ve had an excellent pregnancy – no real morning sickness, little weight gain and an overall enjoyable time. It has kind of crept up on me the little things that are now keeping me tethered to the couch. Since Bugs “dropped” last week my belly is gigantic, to give you some sort of idea, I was opening a can with the can jaws of life over the weekend and managed to clamp my belly inside the handles of the jaws of life – it resulted in a very high pitched yelp and an “I think I need a kiss better”. It’s left a funky bruise just above where my belly button once was – I’m sure when Batman the OB looks at it tomorrow he’ll ask Em what I’ve been up to. Seriously, I didn’t realise my belly was out that far. We walked by a family member at her place of work on the weekend and she mouthed in astonishment something close to “Oh My Gord, You’re F**ked”

The sudden increase in belly size makes it hard to drive, reach into cupboards, empty the dishwasher, sit – all the things I’d taken for granted. Each time I move, it feels like Bugs is squishing something inside me which, pain wise, resembles having an UTI.

One thing that I am very thankful for is that I can sleep through the night most nights and the others, I make it to about 6am. Our central heating doesn’t turn on until after then so it’s hard to get up. On that, it must be so hard for Em to leave our cozy bed, shower and go to work when it’s colder outside our house than in our fridge. Most days I try to get up and shower first and at least give her some semblance of “I’m not going to be home all day” – however between me and you, I think she sees through it.

There’s a Head in My Pelvis

Today Batman the OB was running spot on time, it could be that Kimba was replacing Catwoman for a few days or that the planets had finally aligned.

Batman was full of great banter, from medieval French torture devices to the benefits of waiting for the placenta to come out after birth before driving (otherwise it gets stuck on the accelerator of course). He also said that he would prefer to induce Bugs next week rather than this one. Induce? Em and I shared this very excited look and in that time I believe we both got a little scared. So it turns out that Bugs is fully engaged and all ready to go! It’s kind of a tradition for little ones to be born on other peoples birthdays – so we’re looking at next Friday for Bugs to be born.

Wonder Woman brought around her husband Superman on the weekend to help us fit our carseat. It turns out that even though we had intended to measure it during the whole purchasing process, we forgot and it turns out the reclined baby position does not fit in our black car, whoops. It does however, fit in the red one so I’m taking the capsule to get fitted in the black car tomorrow.

Seven Random Facts/Habits

A while ago Stacey tagged me to to share 7 random facts/habits about myself. I’m skipping the rules about tagging other people to do it as I’m a month late already :)

Ok, on to the random stuff….

Numero Uno
Before I met Em, I dreamt about the place that helped us buy our first home. It was a converted church that looked down into an open lounge area – really gorgeous. I’d also met the mortgage agent who I used to work with in Sydney (we were in Adelaide at the time) and didn’t realise until we were there talking. Everything seemed a little preplanned.

Two Little Ducks
My earliest memory is from when I was 18 months old. A few years ago I asked my Mum who the “old man in the bed surrounded by white” was. It turns out to be my Pop who died when I was 18 months old, Mum took me to the hospital to see him with my Grandmother and he knew he didn’t have long so said goodbye to my Mum.

Tricolori
I can’t fall sleep without having a blanket covering my ear – even in summer.

Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
Before I go to any website – I must first go to Google. Even when I open a new tab in Firefox, I must make it load my “Home” page and then go to whatever address I like (whether it be a Google search or a URL)

5:55 From Central to the Blue Mountains
Clowns and sewer drains freak me out. IT. Need I say more?

Six of one, half dozen of another
I love driving long distances however only with Em. Our trips to Sydney, which take two days there and one day back (15 hours) are the source of many of my favourite memories.

Seven Steps to a Better You
I absolutely love roller coasters – the more Gs, loops and dips the better.

You’re Dropped!

Bugs seems to have dropped, I think this means the engagement is off so I am no longer fearful of the princess cut diamond. My belly is now feels about a foot down from when it was during the week and sitting, getting up, breathing, most things really are easier again. My centre of gravity has changed so I’m being extra careful as I’m used to overcompensating – this could possible lead to more waddling however I am a Taurus.

This weekends plans involve a lot of breakfast – firstly at a place a friend, Blossom (of Powerpuff Girls fame), suggested, a funky cafe which I’m hoping Emsie will wake up and we’ll get to. And then a day out shopping for the “last minute” things we don’t have for Bugs.

We also need to get one of the carseats fitted some time soon – the capsule is going in the red car and then getting replaced with one my Mum has bought for Bugs and the Meridian is headed to the black car complete with its Pram Skin.

My back hurts to I’m going to get up, sneak in and wake Emsie and hope she’s ready to get up and go for some food.

I’m Colonized!

Sounds exciting doesn’t it?

We had another appointment with Batman the OB and Catwoman the midwife today – we’re at 36 weeks and 4 days and Bugs is engaged. I’m hoping she doesn’t wear the ring when she pops out, I’m sure princess cut diamonds can cause lots of internal damage.

It turns out that I’ve got Group B Streptococcus bacteria – about 15% – 40% of expectant mums carry the bacteria and I probably got it from my Mum when I was born. It can get pretty serious which is a little concerning and as soon as contractions start or my waters break I need to head to the hospital for IV antibiotics. With the antibiotics there is only a 1 in 4000 chance that I’ll pass GBS to Bugs. Antibiotics is a small sacrifice when a GBS infection for Bugs can cause sepsis, pneumonia or meningitis.

Bugs keeps getting the hiccups, it’s really cute to watch my belly jump and I’ve counted 4 different bouts of them today.

Does Anyone Iron Sheets?

Great for SleepingEm had organised a bike ride with most of Adelaide today so I stayed home and got some jobs done, like napping, drinking Milo and washing some of Bugs’ things. After a full load of “pinks”, one of “whites” and two of “colours” I can honestly say she has more clothes than Em and I do put together.

I also washed some sheet sets and am beginning to wonder if people do iron sheets? I’m not even sure if we still have an iron. Actually, I wouldn’t do it so I guess it’s more of a question for interest.

I started putting together the backpack we’d gotten for Bugs on the Go – or her “nappy bag”. It’s a Crumpler bag that is designed to hold a laptop however it does a great job of holding all manner of stuff – a change mat, nappies, spare clothes and 386 other things at the same time.

And All Without Instructions… Almost

Feeding Chair!Today started early with a trip to the storage place (that’s Em’s parents’ house) to retrieve some of Bugs’ nursery furniture – her cot and change table. Our good friend – who I’ll call Wonder Woman – came over and helped us as we scratched our heads wondering, firstly, why the cot came with no instruction book and secondly, why there were so many screw holes on the edges and what were the double ended head screws for.

Everything went together fairly well (I’m omitting the swearing, banging and sweating match that was caused by the bookcase) and the room is starting to look great! All the big furniture is in; cot, change table, bookcase, feeding chair and ottoman. Now we’ve just got to sort out the storage in the wardrobe and hopefully we can start claiming back the rest of the house.

Welcome Baby Heath!

Congratulations Ruth and Michelle on the birth of your little boy

We’ve Even Painted the Door!

Dinosaurs! After many calls asking for distance painting advise from my Mum, many more hours of unofficial LAN’s (if you were there – you know what I mean) and a very late night spent putting up wallpaper – Bugs’ room is all decorated.

The walls are “White Duck” – which is a kind of grey colour, much nicer than the “Salmon” colour still spread through our house. We’ve even painted the door to match! Bugs’ room has a very cute baby dinosaur border around half way that gives the room a gorgeous kiddy feel without being too babyish (and it’s not pink). I really enjoyed putting up the border with Em – it is dead straight and the one join we needed to do is fantastic!

The room also got some much needed new carpet – which is stain resistant and lovely to walk on.

Over the weekend we’re putting together the big furniture which we picked places for last night and we need to pick some curtains – it all seems to be tying together nicely!
